The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has stated that nation’s quest for stability at all levels cannot be achieved without the strengthening of local governments as a critical tier of government across the country.

This is also as the union overwhelmingly endorsed the candidacy of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term in office, promising to mobilize their members across he country to work to ensure victory at the polls.

National President of NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel, leading a delegation of members across the country, stated this when they met with the leadership of the Presidential Campaign Council as Chaired by Gen. Buba Marwa in Abuja.

“if we are to ask ourselves, is the local government meeting the expectations of citizens like us? why are our local governments malfunctioning? it is because of the interests that lie therein. We are aware that the Constitution of Nigeria recognises the local government as a full fledged tier of government.

“this tier of government also represents the distribution base to address the issue of poverty and economic differences within the society. Therefore, we have no reason not to support the candidacy of President Muhammadu Buhari because in all his public addresses that has bearing with local government, he has insisted that local government must be strengthened.

” Mr chairman, as a security officer, there is no way you can have stability in Nigeria, there is no way you can have a coordinated country, there is no way you can address security challenges if this critical tier of government is not strengthened.”

Earlier, Gen Marwa had tasked NULGE to support the federal government in its stride to ride the nation of drug abuse especially among Youths and women, adding that two generations risk being wiped out because of the challenge.

Gen Marwa stressed that it took the coming of President Buhari to tackle the issue frontally by setting up a committee against drug abuse under his leadership, even he solicited for the union’s by-in to curb the menace at all levels.
